Q: What do I do if I click on “Click here to take this course” and the curriculum does not appear?

A: There is most likely some type of software being used that blocks pop-ups or SPAM. Try holding down the CONTROL key and clicking to “take this course” at the same time. If this does not work, you will need to turn off the pop-up software while accessing The Learning Destination’s curriculum. Typically you will go to “My Preferences” on your internet provider’s home page or on your email home page. Also, at the bottom of the screen, it will often say “blocking pop ups”. Many times, you can right click on this and choose to allow pop ups only for thelearningdestination.com. If you cannot determine how to turn the pop up blocker off, call your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and they can instruct you on this.

Q: What do I do if I receive an error “34 style is null or not an object”?

A: (for both Questions #2 and #3) Since the version and vendor of the Java Virtual Machine which is active in your Internet Explorer browser is important, you will need a way to quickly tell which version is currently configured within your browser. The easiest way to tell is to go to the following site: http://www.javatester.org/version.html

If you do not have Microsoft Virtual Machine (VM), go to this website to download it for free:
http://www.virtualmachine.tk (XP requires only installing the first link; other versions may just require upgrades)

Then, make the Microsoft JVM the default JVM for the browser by deselecting the Sun JVM as the default Java Runtime.

  1. Launch the Window’s Control Panel (see figure 1).
  2. Select "Java Plug-in 1.3.1_##" (Or, the latest version installed).
  3. From the Browser tab, the browsers should be unchecked (see figure 2). Note that if you don't have a Browser tab, see the Alternate Method below.

Figure 2

Alternate Method:
Internet Explorer provides a direct way of setting which Java VM is the active VM. If you access the Internet Options option in the Tools menu of Internet Explorer, you will be presented with the Internet Options dialog. The Advanced tab of this dialog will reveal the current JVM in use (see figure 3)
In the event that the Sun JVM is installed (and/or in use), you will find an entry in this Advanced tab section. If the Sun JVM is not listed then it can be assumed that it is not currently installed. If the Sun JVM is listed but unchecked, it can be assumed that it is installed but not currently in use for Internet Explorer.

Q: What do I do if a message appears about Security & Active X controls?

A: Open internet Explorer. Click on “Tools” at the top of the screen. Choose “Internet Options.” Choose the “Security” tab. Click on the “Custom Levels” button at the bottom. Make sure the following are checked:

  • Download signed ActiveX controls – Enable
  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls – Prompt
  • Initialize & Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe – Prompt
  • Run ActiveX controls & plug-ins – Enable
  • Script ActiveX controls marked as safe for scripting – Enable
  • Microsoft VM – High Safety

Q: What do I do if a message appears and tells me to “Clear the cache and refresh”?

A: To clear the Cache in Internet Explorer, select "Internet Options..." from the Tools menu. From the General tab, select "Delete Files...". Check "Delete all offline content."

Q: When completing a homework assessment, how can I go back to the curriculum if the assessment is OPEN BOOK?

A: If you need to review the curriculum to answer a question, follow these instructions: Click on FILE, click on NEW, then click on WINDOW. This will open a new window where you can view the curriculum. You can then toggle between the curriculum and the homework assessment windows by choosing the correct button on the bottom toolbar.

Q: What do I do if I receive an “error” message when trying to access a course?

A: Open internet Explorer. Click on “Tools” at the top of the screen. Choose “Internet Options.” Choose the “Advanced” tab. Scroll down. Uncheck “Java (Sun)”. Then make sure that all 3 boxes under Microsoft VM are checked. Click “Apply”, then “OK” (See detailed instructions for next question). Try accessing the course again.

Q: What do I do if I receive a message saying “Your session has timed out” and the system won’t allow me to access the course listing?

A: Open internet Explorer. Click on “Tools” at the top of the screen. Choose “Internet Options.” Choose the “Privacy” tab. Under the "Websites" section, click "Edit". Type in www.thelearningdestination.com, then click "Allow." Then click "OK" to close out the window. Try accessing the course again. The student may also need to delete their cookie and temporary internet files under the "General" tab.

If the browser test shows that pop-up blockers are disabled, but the chapter still does not pop up, then Service Pack 2 may be installed on an XP computer, go to "Tools," then "Privacy," towards the bottom of the window, ensure that the box is checked to block most pop ups, then click on "Pop-Up Blocker" settings, "Add/Allow Pop-Ups" from www.thelearningdestination.com (type in this website). Also, click on the "Security" tab at the top and add https://www.thelearningdestination.com as a trusted site.
